🏰 Overview
Notre-Dame de Paris (in Romanian: Catedrala Maicii Domnului din Paris) is a Catholic cathedral located on the Île de la Cité, in the heart of Paris, on the banks of the Seine.
It is one of the most representative works of French Gothic and one of the most visited monuments in Europe.
📍 Location: Île de la Cité, Paris 4ᵉ arrondissement
🏗️ Construction: begun in 1163 (during the reign of King Louis VII)
🎉 Completed: approximately 1345
⛪ Architecture: Early Gothic and Classical, with Romanesque influences
🕰️ Brief history
1163: the foundation stone was laid by Pope Alexander III.
13th-15th centuries: work continues; the west facade and twin towers are added.
1793 (French Revolution): The cathedral is desecrated, many statues destroyed, the bells melted.
1804: Napoleon Bonaparte crowns himself emperor here, in a grand ceremony.
1844-1864: Major restoration led by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who also adds the famous spire (central spire).
2019: A devastating fire destroys the spire and part of the roof.
2024-2025: Restoration work is almost complete — the official reopening is scheduled for December 2024.
🏛️ Architecture & symbols
West facade: has the two iconic 69 m high towers and three carved portals (Last Judgement, Virgin Mary, St. Anne).
Rosettes: the three huge circular stained glass windows (north, south and west) are among the most beautiful in Europe.
Towers: can be climbed (over 380 steps) — offers a spectacular view of Paris and the Seine River.
Gargoyles and chimeras: added by Viollet-le-Duc, not only decorative, but also functional (they drain water from the roof).
Interior: has a nave 130 meters long, 35 meters high and can accommodate over 6,000 people.
🔥 Fire of April 15, 2019
Flames broke out in the cathedral’s attic during renovation work.
The spire collapsed, and a large part of the wooden roof (from the 12th century, called “The Forest”) was destroyed.
Hundreds of firefighters intervened for 15 hours.
Sacred artifacts, such as the Crown of Thorns (attributed to Jesus), were saved.
Restoration work began in 2021, and the new spire was rebuilt identically, from French oak.
🧱 Restoration and reopening (2024-2025)
The work is coordinated by architect Philippe Villeneuve.
The costs exceed 800 million euros, financed by international donations.
The cathedral will reopen to the public in December 2024, exactly five years after the fire.
The interior will be completely restored, the stained glass cleaned, and the organ — reconditioned and tuned by hand.
🎨 In culture
Victor Hugo’s novel, “Notre-Dame de Paris” (1831), brought renewed interest in the cathedral at a time when it was almost forgotten.
Disney adaptations and feature films have made Quasimodo and Esmeralda universal symbols of Paris.
It is one of the most visited places in the world — over 12 million tourists annually before the fire.
